Site Analysis

Site Analysis is the process of identifying and diagramming individual components of the site as a means to understand the site. These components typically include:

  • The movement of the sun around the site.
  • The movement of wind on the site.
  • The available views from the site.
  • The topography or lay of the land, of the site
  • Spatial qualities of the site

Site Defined

A site is made through the appropriation of an area of land (or parking garage, as is our case) for some use. Prior to this appropriating, the area is simply a location. Note, though, that the term 'use' should not be too narrowly defined; the term means more than the building's program. It also refers to the act of ordering an area of land such that it makes sense and facilitates the ability to place oneself in relationship to the other things in the world. As such, the term 'use' has an existential dimension, as does the making of site.
